Standard 4.0 GPA Scale
| Letter Grade | Percent Range | GPA (4.0) |
|---|
Weighted 5.0 Scale (Honors / AP / IB)
Common weighted scale used in high schools: Honors courses get +0.5 and AP/IB courses get +1.0 over the standard 4.0 value.
| Letter Grade | Regular (4.0) | Honors (+0.5) | AP / IB (+1.0) |
|---|
Plus / Minus Grading
Many schools use plus and minus modifiers — an A- is worth 3.7, a B+ is 3.3 — to reflect performance more precisely. A small number of schools use whole letters only (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.); the plus/minus rows in the table above won't apply at those schools.
Pass / Fail Grades
A "P" (Pass) earns credit but doesn't affect your GPA — neither for nor against. An "F" (Fail) in a pass/fail course typically doesn't count either, but check your transcript policy. Most colleges cap the number of pass/fail courses you can apply to your degree.
Incomplete Grades
An "I" (Incomplete) is a placeholder, not a final grade. It excludes the course from your GPA until you submit the remaining work. If the deadline passes without completion, schools typically convert the "I" to an "F" — which then counts toward your GPA at 0.0.
