How the 4.0 GPA Scale Works
The standard 4.0 GPA scale is used by most U.S. high schools and colleges. Each letter grade you earn maps to a number of "grade points." Your GPA is the average of those points, weighted by how many credit hours each course is worth.
Formula: GPA = (Total Grade Points) / (Total Credit Hours), where Grade Points for a course = Credits × Point Value of the letter grade.
For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class earns 12 grade points; a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class earns 12 grade points. See the full GPA scale for every letter grade conversion.
